About Mr. James P. Doherty, III

James is a graduate of the Episcopal School of Acadiana (1990), Georgetown University (B.S. in Business Administration 1994) and Louisiana State University’s Paul M. Hebert Law Center (J.D. 1998). In 1996, he was the recipient of a Rotary International Foundation Ambassadorial Scholarship, which afforded him the opportunity to conduct a yearlong comparative study of Scottish and Louisiana civil law systems at the University of Glasgow, Scotland.

Prior to joining Becker & Hebert in 2014, Mr. Doherty practiced at Voorhies & Labbe and Frederick & Doherty. He has extensive experience in the areas of Commercial Transactions and Litigation, Insurance Defense and Coverage Litigation, Construction Law and Litigation, Wills and Successions, Business Law, Real Estate Transactions and Litigation, Collections and Admiralty/Maritime Law.

Mr. Doherty is admitted to practice in all Louisiana state courts; the United States District Courts for the Eastern, Middle and Western Districts of Louisiana and the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit. He is a member of the American Bar Association, the Louisiana State Bar Association and the Lafayette Parish Bar Association.

Mr. Doherty has served on the boards of and/or been a member of the American Inns of Court (Acadiana Inn), the Lafayette Parish Bar Association Board of Directors, the Episcopal School of Acadiana Board of Trustees, the Cathedral Carmel School Advisory Council, the Georgetown University Admissions Ambassador Program and the Cathedral Carmel School Men’s Club.

Mr. Doherty and his wife, Michelle, are the parents of three children, Patrick, Katherine and Michael. Mr. Doherty’s father, the Honorable James P. Doherty, Jr., is a retired Louisiana state court judge for the 27th JDC, Opelousas, Louisiana.
